Re: Grecian Slippers from Cleverley

Hi Manself. Thanks for the kind words. I don't think mine are bespoke in the way my other shoes from Cleverley are. They are probably more of a stock special using my last. The price was about a 1/3 more than what the other ready mades cost, and I looked at every model I could find. Fosters quoted m...

Grecian Slippers from Cleverley

There have been a couple of people on the boards and blogs who are interested in Grecian slippers. The pictures they’ve posted (some repeated below) got me interested enough to order a pair on the. David Niven also wears a pair in the Pink Panther (1963). So, when I was in London, I stopped in and t...

Re: New Bespoke Shoes from Gaziano & Girling

Both lasts and shoes are bespoke, and I don’t think are part of G&G’s current line-up. The last for the pumps came working and talking with Tony for a few years ago and draws its inspiration from Edward Green’s “trans-Atlantic Peal” 404 and the 707, which was a last project that I’m told Flusser and...

New Bespoke Shoes from Gaziano & Girling

New Bespoke Shoes from Gaziano & Girling Santa, with a lot of help from the Gaziano & Girling, delivered some new bespoke shoes earlier this month, just in time for Christmas. Thanks a million to Steven at Leffot for helping with the photos. I also have pictures of the one-piece Burhnam boot that G&...

Re: A visit with Smith Woollens in London

Another great video Alden! I'm very lucky to have the two suits made in the Whole Fleece, one in the navy and the other in dark grey. The cloth really is a fantastic twill. I suspect the mid-grey will be next on the list. There is another article someplace on the site by Manton about the Whole Fleec...

Re: Watching the English

On the same topic, readers may like Sarah Lyall's The Anglo Files: A Field Guide to the British (W.W. Norton & Co., 2008). It is a very quick read if you skip the chapter on cricket, which seems to go on forever. Lyall is covers the U.K. for the New York Times , and her writing follows that style. H...

Website for Dugdale Bros. & Co.

Dugdale Bros. & Co. now has a website. Its not bad, but it is not great in terms of information. My favorite bunch that had the heavier cloths (Royal Classic II, I think it was called here in the U.S.) is not among the offerings either by name or cloth numbers. Does anyone know more about what the W...

Great Photos: James Bond (various)

If the detail on these photos does not display well here, go to http://www.blu-ray.com and search for the high-resolution images. The high-resolution images are for members, but membership is quick, free, and does not ask a bunch of questions. If the glen plaid on the first image in From Russia with...

Re: Brooks Brothers v. J. Press v. The Custom Shop

I have a few orders through the MTM program at Brooks from the old store in Newport Beach, California and in New York. The man who runs the program at 346 Madison Avenue is a real treasure. While Brooks has tried to upgrade the quality of its products generally, this program has not yet received the...

Re: Last Chance to Change My DJ

Great choice of cloth. It was on my short list when I ordered a new set this month. I ended up using Lessers 12 oz midnight blue barathea all wool. Peaked lapels using midnight blue grosgrain with a medium rib. Ventless. Am now fixated on what type of buttons to use when the time comes.

Should the postings discussing fullness and drape be merged? Here are a few pictures that I've come across recently. The first one is Adrian (Adolph Greenberg) from August 1939 with drape that is excessive. It seems Corbis owns the rights to this photo, but Vanity Fair ran a colorized version a few ...

When I asked my tailor in London for a bunch of heavy weight swatches, he sent me one that is similar. I can't tell the distributor/maker because the label is handwritten. It says, "6019, RAF Doeskin, 59/60'' 19/20oz." It is a woolen cloth. The handwriting is same as one of swatches from H.E. Box if...

Alden, you know I'm never far from my BlackBerry because of the tons of email and sms messages I receive. My BB works -- all the time. It has to. My iPhone on the other hand is just fun. It manages fun things like music, photos, Google Maps, etc., and it is very well designed for a gadget. It is sli...

I'm told that Vya (http://www.vya.com) from California is good, but I've not tried it. For those of you (and it should be all us) for whom this matters (because it is only a matter of time before your favorite thing becomes new and improved), Noilly Prat has a Contact Us section on its website.
