Re: when to wear a suit?

Wearing a suit without a necktie is an act of submission. Courage is elegant. Submission never is. Bravo! A suit without a tie looks unfinished. As if the wearer forgot something. You need something at the collar.. Very true. 8) 8) 8) :? In London among many professionals, especially in finance, a ...

. So when you worry about what people might think, they are probably not thinking of you at all.

Re: when to wear a suit?

Dear Jfelman, Yes, we have seen a certain decline of the suit, and in many countries a decline in formality. I don't know where you live - you may want to adapt at least a a little bit. Living in continental Europe, I'm still wearing tweed suits for sport events, or tweed coats with flannel trousers...

Re: The ultimate polo coat

Hi Jonathan, I had a similar dilemma a few years back when I got my polo coat in camel hair. I decided to go with peak lapels, albeit with the peak being fairly flat, primarily because I prefer this design. There are plenty of polo coats with peak lapels or with ulster collars. I agree that the fee...

What my old Ivy League tailor liked to refer to as "museum wear".

Re: Which cloth tailors best?

Dear Anikolov, I see what you mean, but… this is not how I would approach it. Each cloth has its purpose. Flannel, worsted, linen, mohair, whatever. Everything I had from the LL subscriptions tailored exceptionally well. It is the quality of the cloth doing the trick, rather than the type of cloth. ...

Re: Overcoat closeure

Dear Snapper, In principle, I would agree with Michael. However, there is another consideration, at least for me - it depends very much on the cloth.. If the cloth has an interesting pattern, I prefer to hide my horn buttons, because I want to cloth to do the show. If the cloth is monochrome, in a s...

Re: Wool/Silk/Linen fabrics

Dear Nem, about ten years ago, I had a summer suit and some trousers made with a linen/merino mix. As you describe it, I expected less wrinkling than with pure linen. My "real life experience" is not so good. Especially the suit looked very good and got me a lot of compliments, but wearing it showed...

Tailors don't live forever

Gentlemen, In the past twelve years, many of my suits were made by two tailors somewhere east of Vienna - one of them retired four years ago at the tender age of 82, but continued making trousers for me. Another one, used by a good friend in the past, took over with some commissions. A year ago, a m...

Re: Overcoat length

Dear Scot, I agree with Concordia, "somewhere around the knee". Where exactly does not only depend on your full size, but also on your proportions. Suggest that you try and play a bit with your tailor. Another consideration would be how protective you want it to be against rain and wind. Cheers, David

Re: Grey flannel suits

Dear Nem, see comments below Interesting discussion. I don’t currently have a single flannel suit, only trousers (5 pairs in various shades of grey). I’m planning on ordering my first flannel suit, probably with a faint PoW pattern. I would like a DB, but I wonder how versatile such a suit would be....

Dear Slew,

you find a nice selection at Acorn. I have made up a couple of them, they are quite a staple, even in summer.

Re: Grey flannel suits

Dear Condordia, Interesting topic indeed :D , I never thought it through the way you do, and never used any rational criteria to decide between DB & SB. I look at the cloth, and think about what might be the more suitable cut and where I would mostly wear it. All my flannels except 2 are DB, and one...
