Hand-made buttonhole appears in White House
Hand-made anything in mens clothing is rare in US politics. Ready-to-wear or expensive but cheap-looking suits, and in some cases, truly cheap, clothes have been the order of the day in Washington, so as not to offend the electorate. But now, as the official portrait of the newly elected Vice Presid...

Re: Blazer style choices
Both flat and domed buttons are ordinarily shanked, rather than with holes. The key with shanked is to sink them deep into the fabric so they don't have a discernible bounce. You can tell in the photo above, because looking at the non-functional buttons on the front, their domed lips are flat agains...

Re: Winter footwear in a formal context
The semiotics of the issue are highly context dependent anyway. In a former life I found myself taking a year-long chemistry course at night at Harvard. The professor was a senior faculty member, an old-time Cambridge man and former head of a Harvard research lab, who in the winter taught in a thre...

Re: Winter footwear in a formal context
Very common in New England. Nothing trying too hard about it.

Re: Overcoat lining
Thanks, perhaps I should request a pure silk or regular lining then. Which do you think is better? Pure silk, while traditional, and still used for formal clothing, is simply not as durable as regular lining. Silk can be used, and is beautiful, on things like white tie tailcoats, but these are not ...

Re: New English Bespoke Shirtmaker: Wil Whiting
If its good enough for you guys, its good enough for Charles, so I will confirm that his shirts, collars and ties are his weakest point. But who would expect Charles to choose a Windsor collar? He clearly has the intention to distance himself from his prodigious style predecessor and create his own...

Re: Black tie musings
There's something excessively fussy about the smaller bow ties. While the larger ones speak to a more relaxed attitude, befitting of a convivial black tie mood. Reminds me of this comment: Charles has a very fine, birdlike, turkey head. He can afford to wear a tiny collar and points. I suspect the c...
