Re: Trouser braid type for black tie?

I've always gone for grosgrain to match the lapels, but "folded" and tucked under the trouser seam so that it "floats", if that makes sense?

Re: Understanding French Ties

Interesting. For many years all I wore were ties from Hermes. Now, long retired, I have chosen to wear small knot grenadines from Budd in dark, muted, colours, and little else.

Re: A cloth-hunter’s cautionary tale

I had my tailor make me a jacket in an H&S Harris tweed. Imagine my horror when I went for drink with a pal who turned up wearing a jacket made of exactly the same cloth, which he had bought OTR in M&S!!

I have rarely met a tailor who works on the basis than they know what is better for their client than their client does.
Oh, I think you have probably met them more than you realize, they just haven't told you :)
But that in itself doesn't make them right......................

Re: Steven Hitchcock Wabi Sabi

I have just worked it out and I think I have probably used seven or eight cutters over the years, mostly out of curiosity and, objectively, probably not a good idea. I have enjoyed the experience with almost all of them. I find that tailors listen, but only up to a point. In the end they all do wha...

To my eye it doesn't look like much has changed between fittings. I think I would share your discomfort.

Looks like they are chalked to be shortened at the front already. I would lift the back rise on the trousers to make them cleaner above the knee.

Re: Polo Coat question

Dear Aston, It’s not the colour that’s called British Warm but rather the wool and its thickness. It’s inspired from the wool that Churchill wore to the meeting in Yalta. Very thick wool. There are several merchants who sell it but I am sure it’s nothing even remotely close to the original. Alex De...

I agree that some of what Crompton does is a little odd. He conceived a coat in a color called British Warm..........

My experience of a true midnight blue is that it is impossible to tell it is "blue" unless held very close to a true black.

Belimad I also use Dan and he is quite a talent, as is Richard when it comes to knowledge on cloth. Dave is great for alterations. Don't know how they do it for the money really.

Re: Thomas Pink... bespoke?!

I knew Peter Mullen quite well when they were setting up shop with Pink. They made excellent quality RTW shirts in Ireland, using good quality cloths, proper unfused collars and cuffs, with a high standard of make. They sold to LVMH in late 1999; the family made a handsome profit. Peter went on to r...
